I've never listened to OP so I can't speak to that, but I just want to say that I too dislike the new Ulcerate. I love Shrines of Paralysis, and the songwriting style and chords on the new record just haven't connected with me. As far as I can tell there are dozens of us. Yeah it just never stuck with me at all. Same with OP. Just weaker songs to me. You know who didn't take a step backwards? Intronaut. Love their new album. I may have been influenced by the fact that I've only given cursory listens to either of them before, so I don't have a huge frame of reference.

Haven't been paying a lot of attention to new releases this year but a couple that stuck out to me were WVRM - Colony Collapse Absolutely devastating death/grind. They've been crushing it for years now so it's great to see them moving up to the national level. Eye Flys - Tub of Lard With a lineup like this it'd be impossible to put out a bad record. Shit just straight up Riffs. Hum - Inlet I'm a sucker for this kinda heavy gazey sound and this is one of the best bands to ever do it. Holy Fawn - Black Moon EP Holy Fawn took the style Hum invented and made it a whole hell of a lot darker. Death Spells blew me away when it came out two years ago, and they've only gotten better since then. Scarecrow - Revenge EP I'm definitely biased on this one since these are my friends, but if you're into Scandinavian style d-beat it doesn't get much better than this.

I admittedly have swaddled myself not only in comfort TV shows but also comfort music so I've been listening to a lot of favorites, but also trying to discover/listen to a lot more music from the sixties/seventies. But these are a few newer things that I've really liked:
The new Vile Creature, obviously. Such an amazing record.
Run the Jewels- RTJ4 (I'm beginning to think RTJ can do no wrong. Every release has been so solid and this one is particularly great. Incredibly timely.)
Hot Snakes- Check Mate (single) & I Shall Be Free (single) (I'm probably biased cause I just love them so much, but if these singles are indicative of the rumblings I hear about another upcoming album I will be a very happy person. I Shall Be Free is particularly great and has some Cramps esque guitars going on that are pretty stellar.)
Viagra Boys- Common Sense EP (they're just so fun and I like that a lot of their lyrics make fun of the idea of what it supposedly means to be masculine. This EP is a bit more synthy than their full length but it's still got the grittiness that I love about them. Their singer is a pretty great tattoo artist too.)
I know there are more but that's the most recent stuff.

I don't know what took so long...probably because I thought they were stoner doom which I am not into really, but I have been on a Primitive Man kick since discovering them a short while ago. I assume their new album will be in my top albums of the year list.

Primitive Man were supposed to play here in April with Full of Hell and Eye Flys, and it's one of the great Covid tragedies.
