Lots of great movies in this thread!
One of the most disturbing things I have watched in recent memory was Hagazussa: A Heathen's Curse. Not a classic horror film per se but geez did it give me bad dreams and really STUCK with me for days.
I also really enjoyed The Void. It definitely gave me some Cronenberg vibes and had a fun Sci-Fi element to it as well.
A lot of people have already named some of my other favorites, but these are some of mine:
The VVitch The Ritual Mandy It Follows Taking of Deborah Logan Hereditary Suspiria (original and remake) Spider Baby What We do in the Shadows House of the Devil Ravenous The Wailing Videodrome The Thing (original) The Strangers Midsommar
I feel like lately my favorite horror films have had more creepiness to outright gore. I definitely like that there is a lot more "Folk Horror" stuff being made as it's one of my favorite genres.

The Void is great. Lot of fun, and yes it had Cronenberg influences at its core which was awesome.
I watched I Trapped the Devil the other night because it has a lot of local (Atlanta) actors in it, and it was a lot better than I expected. It's a slow burn, but it sustains its creepiness throughout.
The Lodge was really good. Have you seen Relic yet? (on PPV) - I think it has the creepy>gore vibe you like for sure (there are a few monsters in it, but at its heart, it is a reflection on dementia).

I don't know if they're streaming or not, but Fred Dekker's The Monster Squad and Night of the Creeps are pretty funny and also pretty damn good movies, even if some of the acting in Creeps ain't the best. But those movies were made by a guy that definitely loves the material that inspired him, and you can see it in those movies. The Monster Squad is awesome fun! Night of The Creeps didn't really catch my attention much when I tried to watch it though, maybe it was just the mood I was in that day but at least the first half of it had a lot of cliche scenarios and not enough weirdness for my general taste, I don't think I finished watching it. I can understand that, it definitely loves its cliches, it's a big love letter to earlier horror films. I do think it's pretty great but I wouldn't begrudge anyone not liking it. Tom Atkins as the detective is real good, he's got some pretty delightful lines.
I love Carpenter's The Thing. Enough so that I got a tattoo based on it. Also, House of the Devil rules. I haven't seen the new Suspiria, but the original is beautifully made and still pretty creepy. And while not as much of a horror film as it is a thriller/suspense film, but Argento's Deep Red is excellent. It's definitely horrific in a slasher way, plus it has supernatural elements, but it's also about a man trying to solve the mystery of a murder he happened to witness. And of course, since it's Argento, it's gorgeous to look at.

I just watched the trailers for both of those and was interested in watching them. I'll definitely check them out! I haven't watched as much horror lately cause I've been taking care of my mom while she goes through chemo and she's not a big horror movie person so then my only option is watching late at night which sometimes is not the best idea if I'm alone. Haha. But I'll definitely add them to my list.

I checked out Host (not The Host) on Shudder the other night and was quite surprised at how effective it was. 'Haunted Zoom call' could have come off extremely cheesy, but they kept it tight (just around an hour) and didn't reach for more than they were capable of pulling off. Definitely worth a look if you're into found footage / Blair Witch style haunts.

I'm not aware of House of the Devil but I totally agree on Argento, haven't seen a movie of his yet that I havent enjoyed. The last one I watched from him was the extended cut of Phenomena that mixed up scenes from the italian and english version making it at really funny at times. Another favorite of mine from him is Inferno.

I guess I'm going to have to check this out

Did someone here recommend Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum to me? It was a quality found footage flick.

House of the Devil is an American film, came out in 2009. Not related to Argento, just something I was seconding from an earlier post that recommended it. It's a pretty slow burn kind of thing. Lots of atmosphere. Bonus horror movie connection, Tom Noonan (who's been in a bunch of stuff) is in it, and he played Frankenstein's Monster in The Monster Squad.
And here's my tattoo. I gave the artist some woodcut reference materials, since that was the style he did that I was really into, as well as some shots of Palmer's transformation, and this is what he came up with. This was from the day after I got it.

That’s one awesome looking tattoo! Love the woodcut style.

I know I'm many years late to the party, but I watched Creep last week, knowing nothing about it beforehand, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. Just... what.

Thanks! It was my first (and so far only one) and it was a really good experience. Looking forward to getting more.

I watched The Vast of Night (2019) last night. Low budget indie sci-fi. One of the best movies I've seen all year.
